I developed a form in ArcPad, which allows me to keep track of animals I test for diseases, such as rabies, distemper, etc. Every time a point is added a "datasheet" pops up and allows me to enter habitat data, which samples were collected, species, etc.
For studies where I might be visiting the same site/trap on multiple days (eg density study) I would like to be able to GPS my trap locations the first day and come back the next day click on the same location, and have a new datasheet popup. Currently, I can click next to the point and a new "datasheet" pops up. However, they do not have the same coordinates, which in theory they should as it's the same trap. If I click directly on the point it brings up the "old" datasheet. Any thoughts on how to remedy this? Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated! I will also note that I am not much of a programer, but sense that some will be involved....
THANKS in advance
I live and work in Northern Nevada. I am a Geographic Information Systems Specialist for an environmental protection department here. I primarily wirk with ArcGIS 9.1, and Pathfinder Office. When I GPS I use an old, big, and bulky Trimble unit (although I am working on my boss to buy a new unit!).

I am out in the feild a lot GPSing for our mapping. The types of maps I make are environmentally based most of the time, although I have done maps for our legal department as well.

Hi

I am currently the sole GIS professional for a county in Georgia and have been using ESRI products for 5 years now.

I began with ArcINFO Workstation and transitioned to ArcGIS with the 8.3 release when they finally got the polygon topology to the point where I didn't have to go back and forth to workstation to check on it. :-)

I use ArcINFO 9.1 currently and am about to transition to a enterprise geodatabase to support a part-time GIS Technician we are hiring (rolling out CU ArcEditor for them) and to serve .5 ft aerial photography we had flown this last winter.

That should do for intros... now.. the question:

I just received two DVDs of bare-earth points in .xyz (Either generated from Microstation or AutoCAD 3D) format. Unfortunately. ArcGIS does not support this format and does not even have a ArcTool to convert this to into something recognizable. I have searched through the ESRI support forums and found no tool that has been made to do this. I have googled until my fingers have bled and haven't even found a freeware way to convert, in batch, these space delimited data files to .csv (which ArcGIS DOES recognize).

I took one of the .xyz files, saved it as a .txt file, manually added field names and replaced the spaces with commas and saved it as a .csv. Hurray, hurray, that worked!! BUT, I have a thousand files.... :-)

Anybody know of a script or program that will do this? Free is the operative word here. Thank you, in advance, for your time in thinking on this.

I am about to graduate with a BS in community development and a BS in social science, minors in real estate and sustainable urban development. The idea is that I will be applying to graduate school for urban planning. However, a classmate of mine dampened my enthusiasm to do this by stating that he decided not to because he didn't want to be $80,000 in debt with a master's degree and no job. My heart sunk when I heard this, since this has been my passion for the last four years. He claims that the market is saturated with planners in Oregon.
I'm currently in a world of debt with school and my degree offers very little technical training.
I'm trying to supplement my education with real estate knowledge, grant writing skills, and a graduate certificate in GIS.
My question is to those familiar with the Portland job market for people with GIS certification. What is your opinion? Will job opportunities for people with GIS certification decline or remain steady? Do you think it is currently steady? I'm curious.

Microsoft, Google in sky fight

Verne Kopytoff, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Internet companies have taken to the skies in a battle for aerial supremacy.

On Monday, Microsoft introduced a preliminary online feature that combines street maps with photographs taken from airplanes and satellites. The product, MSN Virtual Earth, is intended to give users more detailed driving directions and an easier way to search for local businesses.

The release follows Google's recent foray into aerial imagery, including last month's preliminary introduction of a free three-dimensional mapping service, Google Earth. After downloading some software, users can zoom over cities and mountains like a bird.

Google, in Mountain View, also has made aerial photographs available in its maps area. A new hybrid button introduced Monday allows the maps to be overlaid on satellite and airplane imagery, similar to what is available on Microsoft's Virtual Earth.

Both Google's and Microsoft's services allow users to enter search queries by address and business type and have those locations indicated on an aerial image. Roads and driving directions also can be overlaid on the photographs.

Additional features are available on Microsoft's Virtual Earth to save and share searches. Wireless Internet users can automatically have their location plotted for them on a map based on their proximity to wireless access points or based on their Internet IP address.

MSN Virtual Earth is available at virtualearth.msn.com.

Gary Price, a librarian who is an editor for SearchEngineWatch.com, said that the focus on aerial imagery is more of a case of companies trying to impress users with gee-whiz technology than anything else, at least for now. He said the feature would be a lot more useful if users could click on an image for data such as census information about the neighborhood shown.

"I've been a map geek since I was only 3 years old," Price said. "It's cool stuff, but I don't think that seeing an image from the air is going to make me go to a store and buy something."

Google and Microsoft are engaged in a major battle over Internet users. Each has unveiled a series of features designed to keep users loyal and grab a bigger share of the lucrative search-engine market.

Yahoo, in Sunnyvale, also is a major competitor, though its executives have yet to express any interest in aerial images. Amazon.com offers street- level photographs of businesses through its A9.com search engine.

Aerial mapping isn't new to the Internet. TerraServer, a Microsoft-owned site, has been available for years, and so has another Web site, TerraFly.

The point of aerial images on the Internet -- in addition to the utility for users -- is the potential for local advertising. For example, a user who types in a search for cars while looking at a view of the Bay Area gets a sponsored link for a car rental company below Yellow Pages listings for different automotive related businesses.

Aerial photographs used by Microsoft and Google can be outdated. On Microsoft's service, an overhead view of Apple Inc.'s headquarters in Cupertino showed only one building instead of the sprawling campus of 11 buildings.

Microsoft spokesman Chris Warfield explained that Virtual Earth is being released as a test and that images will be updated regularly. Images of Cupertino, he said, come from the U.S. Geological Survey and were taken in 1991 and 2004.

"That wasn't a prank or anything intentional," Warfield said.

In the fall, Microsoft plans to make 45-degree views of some cities available on Virtual Earth to give users a better sense of individual neighborhoods.
