OF course you can't even understand how useful GIS is until you've been usuing it for at least a year. Even then you really can't comprehend the things you can do with it. People just don't understand much else. If you want to let them know there is more to it you could say something else like, "I make maps, as well as compile and manipulate the databases behind those maps."
