Yeah that's the usual response, I guess I'm such a GIS geek that when other people ask I just kind of want them to like it as much as I do. OF course you can't even understand how useful GIS is until you've been usuing it for at least a year. Even then you really can't comprehend the things you can do with it.

I ususally start with a brief history of cartography... just kidding..

GIS is marriage of Digital Mapping and Database technology giving not only an X and Y coordinate, but also an unlimited number of Z values for any XY point/polygon/line.

Then they go cross-eyed.

Yep, we all come to the conclusion eventually that it's easier to say, "I make maps" than get into the nitty-gritty end of things. People just don't understand much else.

If you want to let them know there is more to it you could say something else like, "I make maps, as well as compile and manipulate the databases behind those maps."

Ta-da!!!! <grin>

So as long as I have been taking GIS classes or working in GIS when I tell people what I do they look at me with a blank stare. How do I tell these people what I do without totally boring them to death or leaving something out. I'm trying to keep my explaination down to a couple of sentences.
Please help!
